Thoughts for the Day

What’s on my iPad

In the spirit of Andy Naselli’s post, I thought I’d share what is on my iPad.

I have 106 apps. I can’t believe it! I will only highlight the ones that I find particularly useful.

Starting with the Home Screen:

Recommended apps:

  • Calcbot - it has a tape, perfect for lots of calculating.
  • 1Password - secure, individual passwords (I have over 700) that are shared across my Macs, iphone, iPad, and accessible on the web.
  • Facebook - check several times a day:)
  • Skype - on the go Skype. Works great, eats up your battery.
  • Clock Pro - every kind of world clock: sunrise/sunset, Cook time, Countdown, Sleep Timer, Alarms, Metronome, etc.
  • OmniFocus - keeps me on task, synched across Macs and idevices, a lifesaver.
  • Reeder - best blog reader there is. Go through hundreds of blogs very quickly, more quickly than a computer. Star, send to Instapaper, email, all the great features.

Books

My reading apps:

  • iBooks - beautiful, a pleasure to read. Small selection. Can’t share with other devices, computer. So… don’t use much:(
  • Kindle - functional, large selection, syncs across computers, iphone, and Kindle device. I can start on my Kindle, pick up at the same spot on my iPad, and then finish later on my laptop. I like the highlighting and note taking. Also enjoy the “social” marking - seeing what others underlined. (UPDATE: Here is a neat post that shows how to find FREE or low-cost Christian books on Amazon for your Kindle - I picked up The Praying LIfe and others using this method.
  • Google Books - can’t beat the scanned classics.
  • Audible - the only way to listen to books. Sleep timer, speed control, bookmarking. Great app!
  • The Atavist (and others) - This is a long form article app. There are others. The app is O.K. - but I really do like long form articles. Tip: Amazon has started recognizing this genre. I just read “Three Cups of Deceit” by Jon Krakauer, about the “Three Cups of Tea” nonprofit scandal. It was 30+ pages and terrific. Cost about $2.00. Byliner.com - but you use the Kindle.app on the iPad to read.

Oops, going to storm. Better post this before I lose power. I’ll continue with the next post.
