What’s on my iPad - Christan Apps

Continuing my posts on iPad apps. Decided to take it by category as my 106 apps!, even pared down to the “highly recommendeds”  is too long for one post.

Christian apps (not the best name, but more than just Bible apps)

Bible/Catechism/Memory Apps

  • ESV Bible - Love it, use it for all my Bible reading. Don’t use in church, I’m still old school. Somehow an iPad Bible in a church that was built in 1608 just doesn’t seem right. But… I do use it in Sunday School. Go figure.
  • Fighter Verse - Verse memory app. This is how I started Bible Memory years ago. The app is great. Listen to the verse, hear the verse in song, read the verse in context, read Matthew Henry or Calvin on the verse (with a Pocket Sword link), use a missing letter way of memorizing, etc. Great verses too. Check out the Extended set if you want to memorize longer passages.
  • Pocket Sword - works with or without Fighter Verse. Has commentaries, Bible versions and more. I mostly use it with Fighter Verse and really like it.
  • iMemorize - I don’t know the name of the technique - but it takes you through 10 days of memory, each day blanking out more letters. Really helps test your memory. You cut & paste the text you want. I use for long chapters or for entire books as a review technique.
  • Anki - Memory program that really works! Sync across iPhones, iPads, Macs and a web version. Sophisticated, time-tested, complicated but UNBELIEVABLE memory program. Has thousands of worldwide followers. The app costs, but the web/desktop version is free. So try it out on the web, or on your computer, and if you like - get the app. This has helped me memorize Philippians, large parts of Romans, Galatians, Psalms, and James - plus lots of stand-alone verses. If you want “scripture memory tips for long passages” let me know - I figured out a great system that helps keep the verses in order, and would be happy to share my Decks.
  • WSC in 90 - Westminster Shorter Catechism in 90 Days. I use this with Anki to memorize the catechism. The app is poor, but the only WSC app I could find that worked. I use it for review, and use Anki for most of the catechism.
  • Logos - O.K. I bit the bullet. I am only an occasional Bible study leader, yet am an avid reader of scripture. For a long time it seemed too expensive and had way too many features. But with Logos 4 they now have a Bible Study version that is not too expensive. Actually, with all the commentaries and books I buy, I’m sure in 1-2 years I will have saved money. I am enjoying having lots more resources at my fingertips and it’s made Bible study very enjoyable as I sit in a comfy chair with the iPad app. I love reading my daily Bible reading, and jumping to a good commentary. Very quick and has really enriched my devotional time. One caveat: it’s all to easy to spend money and download more books. I’m looking at the complete Francis Schaeffer:)

Next up - Food and Wine apps. I’m skipping my Entertainment apps, as I have nothing interesting except Netflix. (Post 1)
