What’s on my iPad - News and NewsReaders

Part 6 - News and NewsReaders (just the best apps)

News

News

  • FoxNews for IPad (not shown - on my HomeScreen)  Finally! An iPad app for Fox. Have been playing with it for just a little bit. Looks nice. Still TBD if it stays on my Home screen. Use it for Breaking News.
  • Wall Street Journal - the most expensive app on my iPad. The subscription is pricey. But I read the journal daily so it’s a must have. Beautiful app. Perfect in every way. Far superior to the print version.
  • New York Times - yes, there is pay wall. We subscribe to the weekend paper. For the price of weekend subscription you get unlimited NYTimes access. Really like the app, like the social features (what my friends are reading or recommend), like emailing articles to friends or tweeting them. Love the NYTimes videos (particularly David Pogue on technology and Cooking videos). Great way to see slideshows that accompany articles. Again, superior to the paper version. The only thing I prefer in paper is the Sunday magazine. Easier to read long articles in that version. Read NYTimes everyday.
  • USAToday - Crossword puzzles. That’s it. Best crossword puzzles on the iPad.
  • World Magazine - this is a tough one. I love World and try to read it regularly. Problem is, it often sits on my table growing stale. It’s worth the read, but since it’s not a daily, I let it sit. Sit until I have to throw it away:( The iPad app is beautiful. Very well-done. But, will I read it if it’s an app? Probably not. I’ll forget about it. So, I guess it’s best to leave it on the table - looking up at me, begging to be read. Hope to read it!

Newsreaders

  • Reeder - (not shown) Reviewed this on my Home Screen - Part 1
  • Instapaper - Similar to Read it Later, but Instapaper has become my app of choice. I send articles from Reeder to Instapaper, or long web articles to Instapaper. Good for long reading, saving, filing and archiving web articles you want to keep. Filters out ads, noise, and makes a simple easy to read page.
